Karate, originated in Japan and deeply rooted in Okinawan tradition, is a martial art centered on self-defense, discipline, and the holistic development of the individual. The term comes from the Japanese words kara (“empty”) and te (“hand”), meaning “empty hand.” When combined with -dō (“way/path”), karate-dō represents not just a system of combat but a lifelong journey of personal growth and moral discipline.
Karate emphasizes humility and restraint, guided by the famous principle from its founder, Gichin Funakoshi:
“You never attack first in karate.”
Among the various styles of Karate, Shotokan is the most widely practiced both in Japan and globally. Known for its powerful linear techniques, deep stances, and strong fundamentals, Shotokan stands out for its rigorous training methods and philosophical depth. The name Shotokan, meaning “Hall of Pine Waves,” honors the pen name of Gichin Funakoshi.
"The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants."
One of the leading global organizations in Shotokan Karate is the Japan Shotokan Karate-Do Kanninjuku Organization (JSKKO), headquartered in Hokkaido, Japan. The organization is led by Soke Koichi Yamamura, a highly respected master and a key figure in international Karate and assist by Hanshi Kentaro Yamamura.
In India, JSKKO is headed by Hanshi Paramjeet Singh, the senior-most master in Indian Karate. He is the first Indian to receive the A Grade Referee and Judge certification from the World Karate Federation (WKF). Under his leadership, JSKKO has built a strong presence across India, promoting traditional Shotokan Karate and maintaining high standards in training and competition.
In Kerala, JSKKO is led by Shihan Mohammed Saleem, a committed and experienced karateka with over 30 years in the art.
