Kobudo refers to the ancient (classical) Japanese martial arts that were historically practiced by the Samurai and other warriors, particularly in the Okinawa Islands. The term Kobudo translates to “old martial ways,” and it encompasses both weapon-based and non-weapon-based martial traditions from the ancient era.
While Kobudo was used by professional Japanese warriors on the battlefield, Okinawan Kobudo was primarily developed for civilian self-defense or civil-defense purposes. This form of martial art arose on the Okinawan Islands, where civilians needed to protect themselves in the absence of weapons due to strict laws prohibiting the possession of weapons by commoners.

In the modern context, Kobudo specifically refers to the traditional weapon systems associated with the martial arts of the Ryukyu Islands (modern-day Okinawa). The term Okinawan Kobudo literally translates to “the old martial way of Okinawa,” a name that was coined in the 19th century to describe the weapon systems and techniques developed in the region. These arts, which include the use of various weapons like the bo (staff), sai, tonfa, and nunchaku, are deeply rooted in Okinawa’s rich cultural and martial history.
